REV CANON JEANETTE JENKINS
Jeanette JenkinsJeanette after becoming a Canon in 1998

Born and bred in Glasgow, Jeanette began her working life with the Inland Revenue serving in Glasgow, Kingston on Thames and East Kilbride before leaving to bring up her two daughters. It was her involvement in pastoral visiting in her local church which encouraged Jeanette to train for the ministry. She took the first steps along the way in 1982 and, as a member of the Scottish Episcopal Church which at that time did not ordain women, her journey has been a long one.

It was also a pioneering one. On each step of her ordination, firstly as a Deaconess in 1984, then Deacon in 1986 and finally as a Priest in 1994, Jeanette was among the first women to achieve each stage, an experience she found, in her own words, "very humbling". In April 1999 Jeanette became the first woman Canon of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow.

In 1986 Jeanette became Assistant Chaplain at Crosshouse Hospital and in 1991 also became part time chaplain at the Ayrshire Hospice. In 1994 the latter became a full time post and she still works there. Jeanette says that she has always felt very privileged to share in the lives of people at what is a very vulnerable time and has made many very good friends.

Although she has very little spare time, Jeanette enjoys reading, swimming and walking. She is an enthusiastic member of Kilwinning SWRI where she gets some super ideas for all the hobbies she can take up when she retires.
